If you have committed your life to Jesus, according to the Bible, the Holy Spirit has “gifted” you with spiritual gifts. These gifts are different from natural talents and abilities — although they may be similar. Why, how, and which gifts the Holy Spirit chooses to bestow on each follower of Jesus is, in large part, a mystery. If you’re unsure if you’ve decided to follow Jesus, the following assessment may not be helpful yet in your spiritual journey.
While disagreement exists among sincere followers of Jesus about the nature and function of certain gifts, there is enough clarity in the Bible that we know that gifts exist to benefit the church and to further the spread of the good news of Jesus in the world.
Using a type of assessment tool can help begin to determine your spiritual gifts, but, gifts are often discovered and observed as we begin to serve others and engage in authentic Christian community with other followers of Jesus.
This particular assessment includes all of the gifts listed in Paul’s teaching in Romans 12:3-8; I Corinthians 12:7-11, 27-30, 14:26-33; and Ephesians 4:11 which are the major passages teaching on spiritual gifts as well as some other gifts implied throughout the Bible. While no believer has every spiritual gift, we are all called, in contrast, to display the fruit of the Spirit which Paul outlines in Galatians 5 (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control).
Congratulations on discovering your spiritual gifts! God uniquely created you and gave you these gifts for a reason. Now that you’ve identified how he has gifted you, your next step is to learn how you can use those gifts for the purpose he has for you.
Below, you can learn about your spiritual gifts. It is important to note that at times, we are called to serve within our areas of gifting, and, at times, we are called to serve from our areas of weakness. Our gifts do not entitle us to any specific roles within the church, rather they are gifts from God that enable us to serve. Also, keep in mind that almost any gift can be used on almost any team at Gateway (we need administrative folks in small groups, in KidzTown, and helping with greeting).
